Climb with us

The climb up Mount Meru typically spans three to four days, covering approximately a 46km round trip via the Momella Route. It begins at the Momella Gate, inside Arusha National Park, at an altitude of about 1,500m. The route is relatively steep in places, and the trek provides a good balance of challenge and gradual acclimatisation to the altitude.

As you climb, expect to pass through several distinct vegetation zones, each with its own beauty:

Rainforest Zone (1,500 - 2,500 metres): The lower slopes are dense with tropical rainforest, where you may encounter wildlife such as buffalo, giraffes, zebras, and even elephants. Colobus monkeys and blue monkeys are often spotted in the trees, adding to the sense of being deep in the wilderness. Lush ferns, mosses, and towering fig trees characterise this section of the climb.

Heath and Moorland Zone (2,500 - 3,500 metres): As you ascend higher, the forest gives way to heath and moorland vegetation, where giant lobelias and groundsels can be seen. The landscape opens up, providing sweeping views of the surrounding plains and Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance.

Alpine Desert and Rocky Slopes (above 3,500 metres): Near the summit, the terrain becomes more rugged and barren, with volcanic rocks and sparse vegetation. The trail here involves some scrambling as you navigate the rocky paths leading up to the summit ridge.

Wildlife and scenery en route

One of the unique aspects of climbing Mount Meru is the abundance of wildlife. Since the trek begins in Arusha National Park, it’s not uncommon to spot large game such as buffaloes, warthogs, and antelope on the lower slopes. Birdwatchers will also find the trek rewarding, with a variety of bird species inhabiting the different ecological zones. Look out for species like the silvery-cheeked hornbill, white-necked raven, and Augur buzzard.

As you climb higher, the volcanic features of Mount Meru become increasingly prominent. The mountain’s horseshoe-shaped crater is a striking sight, with sheer cliffs plunging into the caldera, and the smaller ash cone sitting dramatically inside the crater floor. On clear days, the views extend as far as the Rift Valley, and the silhouette of Mount Kilimanjaro looms in the distance.

Difficulty level

Climbing Mount Meru is considered a moderate to challenging trek. The altitude gain is significant, with the summit standing at 4,566m, but the climb is more gradual compared to the steeper Kilimanjaro routes. The final ascent, however, can be strenuous, particularly on summit day, which involves a midnight start to reach Socialist Peak by sunrise.

The hike requires a good level of fitness, as there are some steep sections, especially on the rocky ridge near the summit, where some scrambling is necessary. The route is well-maintained, and all of our climbers are accompanied by a professional guide, porters and a park ranger, which adds to the overall safety of the trek.

Despite the physical demands, the climb is less technical than other high-altitude treks, making it accessible to both experienced trekkers and those new to mountain climbing. Proper acclimatisation, pacing, and hydration are key to managing the altitude and ensuring a successful summit attempt.

The summit

Summit day is both the most challenging and the most rewarding part of the Mount Meru climb. After a midnight start from Saddle Hut (3,570 metres), climbers embark on a steep ascent in the dark, aiming to reach the summit at dawn. The trail includes narrow ridges and rocky sections, requiring focus and care.

Reaching Socialist Peak, the highest point of the mountain, at sunrise is a breathtaking experience. The early morning light reveals sweeping views of the Meru Crater and its ash cone, with the vast plains of Arusha National Park spread out below. On a clear day, the sight of Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance is nothing short of spectacular.

The descent is faster, and the changing light allows you to fully appreciate the diverse landscapes and wildlife as you make your way back down the mountain.

Through years of guiding guests on unforgettable safaris, we’ve learned that crafting the perfect safari bag is an acquired skill, and it often takes more than one trip to get it just right. Between luggage restrictions and unpredictable weather, knowing what to bring and what to leave behind can be tricky.

So, we’ve compiled some handy tips to help simplify the process and make your packing stress-free...

Weather matters

Understanding the climate in each location you’ll be visiting is key when planning your safari wardrobe. While we’re always here to help with specifics, here’s a general breakdown to guide you:

In East and Central Africa, the tropical climate remains fairly consistent throughout the year, influenced more by altitude than by season. For instance, Kenya ranges from coastal areas at sea level to high plateaus above 2,000m, with some mountain peaks soaring over 5,000m. Higher elevations experience cooler mornings and evenings.

The landscape also plays a role. In areas like Rwanda’s rainforest, expect humidity and rain all year, while the wide-open savannahs of Tanzania and Kenya have more distinct rainy and dry seasons. The primary rainy season runs from April to June, followed by a drier period until September, with another brief rainy spell from October to December.

Choosing the right luggage

Your choice of bag can make or break your safari packing experience. It needs to be lightweight yet durable, flexible enough to fit into small aircraft compartments, and tough enough to endure rough handling.

Duffel bags are your best option. Not only are they spacious and easy to manoeuvre, but they’re also compact and ideal for safari travel. When choosing a bag, pay attention to its weight when empty—lightweight bags maximise your capacity under strict baggage allowances. Many small flights between safari camps enforce weight limits, which typically range from 12 to 20kg (26 to 44 lbs). Be sure to confirm these limits before departure with us.

Avoid bags with retractable handles and wheels, as they add unnecessary weight. Opt for a design with lockable, concealed zips to prevent damage during handling. Also, minimise external straps to avoid snags during airport transfers. Finally, check that the bag’s material is weather-resistant, as your luggage may face rain or dust on your safari journey.

Packing strategies

Packing light, breathable, and layered clothing is the way to go. Here are the essential items we recommend:

When it comes to colours, stick to neutral tones like khaki, beige, grey, and brown, which blend well with the natural environment. Avoid white (which stands out and gets dirty easily) and black, as it attracts insects and absorbs heat.

Toiletries and personal items

Most safari lodges provide complimentary toiletries like shampoo, soap, and lotion, so you can save space by leaving these behind. However, if you prefer your own products, pack small, travel-sized containers. Ensure any medications are packed, along with prescriptions for any controlled substances you may need. To avoid leaks, pack toiletries in a waterproof bag, and double bag them in case of spills. This extra layer of protection ensures your clothes remain safe during transit.

Once you’ve gathered everything, lay it out in front of you and organise it by category. This will help you decide how best to pack to maximise space.

Packing cells are great for this—they keep clothes and items organised within the bag and make unpacking much easier when moving between camps. Alternatively, rolling your clothes can prevent creases and help you fit more in. Shoes should be packed in plastic bags to keep your clothing clean.

Carry-on essentials

A lightweight, durable carry-on bag, such as a backpack, is ideal for safari travel. Make sure it has secure compartments for your travel documents, wallet, and any personal items you’ll need on the journey, such as a tablet, phone, or reading materials. Always keep valuables in your carry-on, not your checked luggage.

For photography enthusiasts, safari trips can mean carrying heavy camera gear. To keep it light, pack a wide-angle lens for landscapes, a telephoto lens (300mm+) for wildlife, and consider a camera bag that can double as a carry-on.

Soar over East Africa on an aerial adventure

A balloon is the ideal safari vehicle, allowing you to float silently over the African plains without disturbing the wildlife below. With a quick blast of the burner, the basket can rise for panoramic views or descend to skim the grasslands. A hot air balloon ride provides a unique perspective of Tanzania, offering sights, sounds, and smells that few tourists experience. A balloon safari is a true adventure and a remarkable highlight of any Tanzanian journey.

This incredible, once-in-a-lifetime experience offers a fantastic view of East Africa's scenic beauty, with the chance to drift unobtrusively over the wildlife and landscape below. The exceptional peace of this unique and almost otherworldly view will remain a truly cherished memory forever.

Your East African balloon safari adventure begins early in the morning, when you depart your lodge or camp. It will still be dark, and you may be lucky enough to spot nocturnal wildlife on your way to the launch site.

You will arrive at the launch site by 6 am and watch as the balloons are prepared for take-off. You will meet your pilot, who will provide a safety briefing and explain what you can expect during the flight.

As you board the balloon, you’ll rise gently from the ground. Meeting the sunrise, your balloon floats in whichever direction the winds of the day carry it across this wonderful area. You’ll lift off to a height of approximately 10–20 metres, leisurely floating with the wind.

At this altitude, you’ll enjoy a glorious view of the sunrise while looking out for animals below. The panoramic views from this height will leave you speechless, as you witness the majesty of the Tanzanian landscape.

At times, the flight may be low, offering a different perspective, while at other moments the balloon may soar to 1,000 metres or more. Your pilot, who knows the area well and is a dedicated conservationist, will point out animals, birds, and points of interest.

Upon landing, you can observe the complete deflation of the balloon envelope. Our vehicles will then transport you a short distance to breakfast.

Breakfast is set up on the picturesque savannah, typically under the shade of a solitary acacia tree. You will enjoy a full bush breakfast in the African style, complete with eggs cooked to order, fresh juices, waiters in traditional Swahili attire, and, of course, champagne.

During breakfast, you can view the photos your pilot took during the flight and decide whether you would like to purchase them, or any of the other merchandise on display. After breakfast, you will be taken to the rendezvous point to meet your driver-guide and continue with your day’s game drives.

The balloon typically accommodates about eight passengers, or up to sixteen in the larger balloons. Children under seven are not permitted. There is no maximum age, as long as you are fit, though it is advisable to consult your doctor before attempting this safari. Upon landing, you may experience bumps and jolts that could lead to back or joint pain afterwards.

Where to go
